Karim Benzema struck a superb hat-trick for Real Madrid on his return to France.
Real Madrid hammered Auxerre 4-0 thanks to France striker Benzema's hat-trick.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the other goal.
Aitor Karanka, who took charge in place of the suspended Jose Mourinho, said of Benzema: "Karim knows who he is and it was important for him to have a day like this.
"It will come in handy for him and the team. After Christmas we will have nine games and all players will be important."
