Harry Kane was included in the England U21 squad for this summer's European Championships in the Czech Republic.
On Wednesday, the star Tottenham striker was selected by Gareth Southgate for the UEFA tournament and ex-Spurs star Hoddle was thrilled to see the Premier League's second top scorer and Young Player of the Year representing the Young Lions.
"I think he wanted it and that is the main thing," Hoddle told Sky Sports News HQ.
"I know his agent went to the FA and said to them that if they wanted him he is prepared to play.
"That's fantastic for the young man and that sets a great precedent for the future for others."
Hoddle added: "England will be delighted and hopefully he will get extra rest.
"He's a young man so we don't want to overplay him. But it's a very positive decision for him and for England going forward if we want to get youngsters coming through the ranks."
