Kaden Rodney: I kept news of Crystal Palace debut to myself

Kaden Rodney is floating today after making his Crystal Palace debut for their Carabao Cup win against Oxford United.

Rodney said he didn't let many people know he'd make his Palace debut on Tuesday night, instead preferring to get his head down and focus on the match.

The 17-year-old full-back did well in his first competitive minutes, helping Palace keep a clean sheet and progress to the League Cup third round.

He said he only had a few hours' notice pre-match, and that Patrick Vieira told him to “influence the game".

“[I found out] only a couple of hours before the game, actually," Rodney told Palace TV. “So it was a shock. I didn't want to do that [text people] – I messaged the ones closest to me and got my head down and tried to do my best out there.

“He [Vieira] just told me he knows he has faith in me, so go out there and do what I can do and influence the game."

Looking at the match itself, Rodney expressed his delight at earning a landmark moment, and said he felt Palace coped well against determined opposition.

“It's an indescribable feeling," he smiled. “It was a great run out there trying to show the manager what I can do. Hopefully I can get more opportunities.

“Coming to these grounds where the crowds are tight to the pitch is going to be difficult at times but we did well today as a team.

“I thought in the first-half we did all right. The gaffer wanted us to go more attacking. When you play the lower divisions it's harder to influence your football in the game. So I'd say we did all right."
