Juventus president Agnelli successfully appeals one-year ban

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has overturned Juventus president Andrea Agnelli's one-year ban imposed for his role in a scandal connected to ticket sales at the club, but the Serie A team has had its fine doubled and will have to play one match with one of the main sections of its stadium closed, reports Sport Business.

In September, Juventus said it would appeal after the FIGC imposed the suspension on Agnelli. FIGC's National Tribunal also imposed a fine of €20,000 ($23,700) on the 42-year-old, who has led Juventus since 2010 and is one of the most senior figures in European football, along with a fine of €300,000 for the club itself.

However, the FIGC's appeals court has now changed Agnelli's sanction to a fine of €100,000, with the suspension having been lifted as of yesterday (Monday). The Serie A champion was fined €600,000 and will have the Curva Sud of its Allianz Stadium closed for the home match against Genoa on January 22.

Agnelli was initially facing a two-and-a-half year ban as part of the FIGC probe into an allegedly illicit relationship with a group of Juventus' 'ultra' fans, which included beneficial ticketing agreements. The federation's prosecutor, Giuseppe Pecoraro, had recommended the ban, along with punishments for Juventus including two home matches played behind closed doors at the Allianz Stadium and a further game with the southern end of the venue that houses the ultras shut.

In other rulings made by the FIGC Juventus security director Alessandro D'Angelo and ticketing director Stefano Merulla had their suspensions and fines dropped. D'Angelo was originally banned for 15 months, while Merulla had been handed a one-year suspension.

However, former marketing director Francesco Calvo saw his appeal rejected. He will be banned for one year and will have to pay a €20,000 fine.
