Jurgen Klopp's transfer record: How he'll spend Liverpool's money

COMMENT: They'd just been discussing transfer targets and budgets. But between FSG and Jurgen Klopp the message was clear: We go with what we have.

Only it wasn't the Liverpool owners lecturing their manager-elect. It was Klopp, insistent that, after running his eye over the squad - and consulting trusted lieutenants Zeljko Buvac and Peter Krawietz - Liverpool, man-for-man, were potentially a top four team. Only minor tweaks would be needed come the January market.

However, for Liverpool fans, investigating Klopp's past transfer record, you can form an idea of how the new Reds manager intends to set out his stall. The emphasis being on power, versatility - and Chelsea:

DEFENCE

Klopp insists on tall, powerful centre-halves. Midway through last season, Borussia Dortmund were shopping for a new centre-half ahead of the January market. High on agenda was Chelsea's controversial signing Papy Djilobodji, then of Nantes. Klopp and BVB chief Michael Zorc fancied the Senegalese as cover - and an eventual successor - for Mats Hummels.

Also interesting Klopp at the time was Andrea Ranocchia, the now deposed Inter Milan captain. The Italy international is currently available from Inter ahead of the winter transfer window after falling out with coach Roberto Mancini.

Yevhen Khacheridi, all 6ft 6in of him, was considered, though Dnipro couldn't be persuaded to part with the Ukraine international. Tomas Kalas, then of Chelsea, but currently on-loan with Middlesbrough, was discussed as Klopp made the most of BVB's East European network.

MIDFIELD

Klopp likes to have a defensive lynchpin for his midfield and had BVB challenge Chelsea for Nemanja Matic when he became available from Benfica. But the Germans could not overcome Chelsea's buy-back option.

Klopp likes speedy wingers and for the flanks at BVB, he fancied Mohamed Salah, before he quit FC Basel for Chelsea.

Kevin Volland, a former Hoffenheim teammate of Roberto Firmino, was another wide player to attract Klopp's interest. At Melwood, he'll find extensive scouting reports on the 23 year-old, with Liverpool having followed his progress for the past 18 months.

More centrally, Klopp is a fan of Anderlecht playmaker Dennis Praet, who resisted overtures from BVB 18 months ago. Just this week in Belgium, its emerged Praet is seriously exploring the prospect of leaving Anderlecht in January.

ATTACK

There's little secret of what Klopp wants in a striker. His prototype is Robert Lewandowski, now of Bayern Munich. When it became clear BVB would lose their star Pole, a wide net was cast to find a replacement.

Diego Costa, another from Chelsea, was considered while with Atletico Madrid. And Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema also dropped onto the radar.

Klopp doesn't lack ambition and ran Chelsea close in the battle for Costa.

He even had former BVB stars Dede and Marcio Ambrosio make contact with the then Atletico ace to talk up Dortmund and the Bundesliga.

Such a willingness to lean on past players does suggest Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard can expect to hear from Klopp in the near future.
