Jorge Sampaoli & Sevilla: 5 things you may not know about the veteran Argentine coach

Jorge Sampaoli's move to Sevilla hasn't gone to plan as they continue to battle against the LaLiga drop.

For the 62-year-old Argentine, this is a return to the club he was in charge of for the 2016/17 LaLiga Santander season, when he led Los Nervionenses to fourth place in the standings with 72 points, which was their highest finish in seven years.

As such, Sevilla FC fans have fond memories of 2016/17 and of the dynamic football Sampaoli's side played. But, they and other football fans might not be aware of these five facts about the coach.

His past as a bank teller

Sampaoli is from Casilda, Santa Fe, and played in the Newell's Old Boys academy as a youngster. However, a serious injury when he was still a teenager ended his chances of playing professional football and Sampaoli took on a job as a bank teller in Santa Fe. As he started out his coaching career, he was able to combine his passion for football with his work in the bank.

The day he swapped the dugout for a tree

One of the first clubs he coached was Alumni de Casilda and Sampaoli led them to a local final. However, he was suspended and had to serve a touchline ban in the match. So, the young coach climbed a tree that overlooked the stadium and instructed his players from there. The local newspaper La Capital snapped a photo of him and compared him to Bruce Willis in 'Die Hard'.

He was the first coach to win silverware with Chile

Sampaoli gradually worked his way up the coaching ladder in Argentina, then in Peru and then in Chile. Between 2010 and 2012, he was in charge of Universidad de Chile and did such a good job there that he was given the Chilean national team job. In that post, he led La Roja to their first official senior trophy, the 2015 Copa América, when they defeated his home country of Argentina on penalties in the final.

His love of music

Away from the football pitch, another passion for Sampaoli is music. He even has several tattoos related to the Argentine band Callejeros, such as logos and lyrics. He himself has taken lessons to learn how to play the drums.

The long hair of his youth

Although Sampaoli has become famous for his current bald look, he used to have very long hair when he was 15 years old. One day, his school ordered him to cut it and his father agreed, but Sampaoli ran away as soon as he saw his father holding scissors. "He always had a rebellious spirit," his father later recalled.
