Jewell: Barnes can develop at Derby

Derby County boss Paul Jewell is confident of holding onto winger Giles Barnes beyond the January market.

West Ham, it would appear, have cooled on Barnes but Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Manchester City have emerged as "interested" clubs according to reports, though none have been backed by quotes or confirmation from the clubs.

"No clubs have spoken to me about Giles Barnes," Jewell told the Derby Telegraph.

The Rams manager believes Barnes can have a bright future if he continues to learn and progress. Giles has got all the tools to do the job but he is a long way from fulfilling his potential - hopefully, he can do that here," said Jewell.

"If he applies himself properly, he can go far in the game because he has got a lot of ability. There are plenty of 'yes' boxes ticked with Giles.

"Now we need to nurture that potential and ability in the right direction.

"He is only a kid. He has got a lot of confidence but he needs to learn the game and I think he is willing to learn.

"He has got a big future as long as he does the right things and continues to progress."
