Italy coach Spalletti explains Immobile, Scamacca omissions

Italy coach Luciano Spalletti has explained omitting Lazio striker Ciro Immobile from his USA tour squad.

The Azzurri will meet Venezuela and Ecuador in friendlies over the coming week.

On Immobile, Spalletti said: “I am taking anyone for a ride when it comes to Ciro. I know he is an important player over the years for Lazio and the Nazionale, but he is going through a period where he struggles to express his full potential and I have to take everyone into consideration."

Atalanta striker Gianluca Scamacca was also overlooked.

“Scamacca simply hasn't been playing very much recently. When I did bring him along, I don't think he gave his best. It's important at international level to make an immediate impact when the first match can compromise everything. You must be sure that everyone can give their contribution straight away.

“We also need to consider the future, so for example I want to see Lorenzo Lucca up close to see what he's made of. I am not dumping anyone, but giving others a chance."
