Inter Milan hero Beppe Bergomi feels their defence has been a problem this season.
However, he feels Nicolo Barella can become a team leader.
He told Gian Luca Rossi's YouTube channel: "(Danilo) D'Ambrosio's absence complicates things, because there is still a lack of options in defence, where there have been so many difficulties, especially away from home, conceding avoidable goals like in Bologna and showing little maturity.
"There is room for improvement in defence, there is a lack of compactness. Goals are scored, but you have to be careful in the defensive phase. With so many players in attack, you get caught out too easily.
"However, there is plenty of time for Inter to lock down the top 4 and they can go deep in the Champions League. You need compactness, you need to recover all the absentees and you need leaders.
"Barella is an enthralling player, for example. He mustn't be impatient and must lead the team."
