Ian Harte exclusive: Victory at Liverpool proved Leeds quality; Marsch the right man for the job

Leeds United hero Ian Harte is confident his old club will stay up - and with Jesse Marsch remaining charge.

Harte was delighted for Leeds after their shock victory at Liverpool on Saturday, insisting the result was always on the cards given the team's recent form.

Speaking exclusively to Tribalfootball.com thanks to Bet365, Harte said: "They had a great start to the season. They had a little blip, especially looking back to the Arsenal game, they probably should have got something from that.

"But I'm delighted that they got the win. Liverpool is a very difficult place, so to go there and do the job that they did the other day was quite remarkable. It just goes to show that all the players are fully behind the manager."

Indeed, Harte is adamant Marsch is the right man for the job at Elland Road and victory at Anfield can be a turning point for the campaign.

He added, "To be honest I think he did well last season and this season. To beat Chelsea at Elland Road - the start that they had, people are going to say, 'Oh my God, Leeds are going to be right up there.' They had a bit of a blip, but I think every team goes through that. Hopefully that win against Liverpool can push them on now."

Harte, who played over 200 games for the club, is confident Leeds can target a comfortable mid-table finish this season, despite their shaky start. The Irishman convinced sporting director Victor Orta's summer signings will prove their quality as they adjust to Premier League demands.

He said: "I think the strength they're putting forward is definitely good enough. I think they added some very good players in the summertime and they just needed a win, which they got at Liverpool. Hopefully they can build on that. I think the next game they have is Bournemouth at home, so if they can get a win there I think it will start pushing them up the table.

"There's no given right for any team to stay in any league. Over the course of a season if you don't perform, no matter what club you're at, then come the end of the season where you are if you get relegated then you deserve to go down.

"No matter what club, whether it's Newcastle, Leeds, Man United, Man City, you've got plenty of time to perfect it. And Leeds is a massive club, but there are some massive clubs that have got relegated before. I think that with the win the other day they can build on that before they break for the World Cup."
