I've learnt a lot from previous Villa captains - Agbonlahor

New Aston Villa captain Gabby Agbonlahor admits he has learnt plenty from past skippers to help him with the role.

The 26-year old attacker has been installed as Villa's leader in the absence of Stiliyan Petrov, who is battling leukemia, and feels he is equipped to do a good job for the West Midlands club.

"Olof Mellberg was the man with the armband when I made my debut in 2006 and since then we have had Gareth Barry, Martin Laursen and, of course, Stiliyan," Agbonlahor told the Birmingham Mail.

"I learned a lot from all of them and I've also matured as a player, so the prospect of being captain isn't as daunting as it might have been a couple of years ago.

"I had my first taste of wearing the armband when Stiliyan missed the recent game at Wigan with a thigh strain."

But the England international indicates that he does not the role on a permanent basis as he would rather Petrov make a full recovery.

"I am honoured to be wearing the captain's armband and I just wish it could have been in different circumstances," he addd.

''My biggest wish is that Stiliyan will come back and lead us again."
