I should have sat out 2006 World Cup - Man Utd and England captain Rooney

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that he regrets going to 2006 World Cup with England.

The striker was not fully fit for the tournament in Germany as he broke his metatarsal during the second half of the domestic season.

Rooney was subsequently sent off in England's quarter-final against Portugal for stamping on opposition defender Ricardo Carvalho and has since revealed he was well below the conditioning level required to play well at such a tournament.

He speaks about it in the soon to be released special BBC documentary called 'Wayne Rooney – The Man Behind The Goals': "If I could go back, I would probably have sat out the World Cup in Germany.

"I never really had that match sharpness. It was a big ask to get fit after six weeks out not playing."

"I go into tournaments and I'm always confident – for some reason it just hasn't happened.

"Maybe I just put too much pressure on myself."
