Hull boss Brown insists no rift with departing striker Windass

Hull City boss Phil Brown insists he has no grudge against released striker Dean Windass.

Windass joined Oldham on loan in January, but his time at the League One club was cut short and he finished his Hull career in the reserves.

Doncaster Rovers had also been keen to sign Windass and Brown believes the local hero should have signed for the Championship club instead of Oldham.

"He was adamant he wanted to play, but I didn't think he was fit enough to play in the Premier League aged 40 - that was our difference of opinion," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail.

"I think he was foolish to take the Oldham position as opposed to a chance he had with Doncaster.

"That offer was ideal for him, Doncaster were playing good football, but needed someone on the frontline.

"Maybe then he'd have won another year or two in the Championship, but whatever he chooses to do, good luck to him."

However, despite the disappointing end to Windass' time at the KC Stadium, Brown has no quarrel with the player.

He added: "I've got no animosity or bad blood towards Dean Windass, but I wish it could have ended in a more poignant way.

"My advice to him was always to sit on his last year, and accept the plaudits and credit that he deserved. I dare say fate will dictate that we cross paths again in our careers, but we wish him all the best."
