Holman wants Dutch title with AZ

Before he leaves for Aston Villa, Brett Holman is determined to help current club AZ Alkmaar to the Dutch Eredivisie title.

AZ dropped out of the Europa League at the hands of Valencia on Thursday night and now the Australian midfielder, who is set to join Villa at the end of the season, has his sights set on the Dutch title.

"We are still very much in the race," said Holman whose AZ side sit second on the table, a point behind Ajax.

"I therefore say I believe in the national title. We are certainly not hopeless. As long as we theoretically have a chance, I will give everything to the cause."

And upon falling out of the Europa league race in the quarter-final stage, Holman admitted it was a great effort by the club to get as far as they did and even beat Valencia in the first leg before losing 4-0 in Spain.

"We have done a fantastic job. Nobody had reckoned we'd do this," he added. "Everyone thought that we are against Anderlecht and Udinese so we'd fly out in the group, but we went on.

"At home we won in Valencia, which no Dutch team had ever succeeded. So I'm not afraid of a backlash in the coming weeks.

"We're disappointed, but tomorrow we have a moment with each other. When we finally look back on this whole European series, we can be proud."
