Higginbotham, 33, was on loan at Nottingham Forest last year after recovering from a knee injury.
He said: "I don't know what's going to happen at the moment.
"It's completely up to the manager and he's made some very good decisions over the years, so whatever he decides I will accept.
"It was a stop-start season and it's been a very frustrating last 18 months for me since the injury.
"Now I just want to have a good pre-season and get as fit as possible.
"I missed pre-season last time and I honestly don't think you catch up."
