Wigan Athletic are confident of selling James McCarthy for at least £10 million, says Hamilton chairman Ronnie MacDonald.

The lucrative transfer of Irish ace McCarthy will eventually net Accies £3.3m and has shown them how future deals will be done.

MacDonald told the News of the World: "They reckon they'll sell him for £10-12m and we're into a percentage of that. We've also got add-ons linked to his appearances and caps which will benefit us.

"We included them in the transfer because we knew he was an absolute diamond. Maybe if he went to Korea for three months some club in Scotland would have bought him. Instead, we were offered £200,000 because he was here.

"I just don't understand the mentalities with some clubs here.

"Why not buy him, develop him, and if they sell him on to Arsenal or whoever, they get the sell-on fee?"
