Hamilton boss Reid keen to re-sign Wigan's McCarthy

Hamilton boss Billy Reid admits he'd love to bring Wigan midfielder James McCarthy back to the club on-loan.

McCarthy has struggled to make an impact at Roberto Martinez's Latics due to form and fitness and rumours have suggested he could return to New Douglas Park in a loan capacity.

Reid is aware of the rumours, but believes a deal is unlikely to take place because of finances.

"I have heard the rumours but don't really think there is much mileage in it at the moment," Reid told the Daily Record. "We'd love James back, that's obvious, but I don't think it's really viable. He is down there, he's paid handsomely and Accies have been paid by Wigan.

"I've not spoken to them about it and while I'd love it to happen, financially I don't think it could.

"If Martinez thought it would work for him to let James go out on loan then he has to decide that but we know it would certainly work for us. Whether Wigan would see that as the right move for James, only they can answer. I'm not in the position to do that for them.

"James has had a difficult time since he left. He was injured in pre-season and has been playing catch-up. But I'm sure he'll take his chance when he gets it because he's a real talent."
