Hamburg management admit Everton striker Nikica Jelavic's terms are simply too rich for them.

They have been forced to concede defeat after failing to come close to matching their £7million-plus asking price.

"Jelavic is a wonderful striker, but the plain fact is, we can't afford him," said Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer.

"As things stand, we won't be able to proceed."
