Gullit blasts 'Dutch arrogance' for ignoring Liverpool defender Van Dijk

Dutch great Ruud Gullit insists the absence of Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was key to Holland's poor Euro 2020.

Gullit argues it's a show of arrogance from Dutch football that there was little recognition for Van Dijk's absence during the tournament.

He wrote for De Telegraaf: “Italy often succeeds historically, such as at this European Championship against Spain. It is striking that Chiellini and Bonucci were praised in the Netherlands, but at the same time no one spoke about the absence of Van Dijk for Oranje. He is on their level.

“You can explain the radio silence about Van Dijk as refusing to think in excuses, but also as arrogance. When I talk to former top footballers from other countries, they often hold up the mirror to me that we are arrogant.

“We explain it all one more time and think we are above everything. While that is not based on anything according to various toppers (great former players). A little bluff is not bad, but please in combination with some humility."
