Glory notch up first win as Phoenix falter

Perth Glory have won their first game of the season to climb off the bottom of the A-League table, leaving Wellington Phoenix a game behind. In an important match for both clubs, the Glory won 1-0 at home on Sunday through a Eugene Dadi penalty to release mounting pressure on players and coaches alike. Glory coach Dave Mitchell was very relieved after the match when speaking to the A-League's official website. He said, "Today was about getting the three points and getting the self belief in there…because we played well in some games and we haven't got the just desserts. "(Wellington) came here to defend and catch us on the break. Last season we would have got caught by that but the good thing was, I think we looked very solid in defence today." After letting in 11 goals in three games prior to the weekend, it was important for the Glory to defend well and keep a clean sheet which they did, their first in 19 matches. On the other hand, Phoenix coach Ricky Herbert was frustrated with his squad, especially after letting an under-manned Perth team dictate terms. "I think we had the quality to come here and win but we didn't," he said. "Last week was a sign of being there and being competitive and tonight I think we just froze a little bit. "For us to come here and get three points, no matter how it looked, it was important to go away with it. "(It's a) confidence thing with us now. I think that kinds of takes a little bit of a hit and it's important that everybody's bright and up for it on Tuesday at training. You can't look anywhere else, we got what we got and we need to make that better." A rejuvenated Perth outfit face the daunting task of travelling to Gosford to take on Central Coast on Friday night as the Phoenix will be looking for a positive showing against the in-form Sydney FC at home on Saturday.
