Giggs not Man Utd's first player-coach (and the omens ain't good!)

Ryan Giggs isn't the first player-manager at Manchester United.

The last time United had a player-manager was when George Clarence 'Lal' Hilditch replaced John Chapman at the helm in 1926.

The half-back from Hertfordshire found the transition to the dugout difficult, though. He took over in October 1926 but was dismissed six months later, having won just nine of his 31 games in charge. Hilditch, who died in 1977 aged 83, is the shortest serving manager in the club's history.
