Gerrard hoping for big season from Liverpool skipper Henderson

Former Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has gone on to back Jordan Henderson to shine during the upcoming campaign.

Following the departure of the legendary Gerrard, Liverpool appointed Henderson as club captain but it has to be said that the 26-year-old has not quite been able to fill the boots of his predecessor following a frustrating injury-riddled campaign last term.

As a result, Henderson has come under a lot of fire from the fans but Gerrard has gone on to defend the England international and has backed him to be the leader the Merseyside club expects him to during the upcoming Premier League campaign.

"I think we all need to get behind Jordan, the manager, the staff and the fans," the LA Galaxy midfielder told The Anfield Wrap.

"He had a very difficult year last year with injuries, I've been there when you're injured and frustrated. It affects your confidence and you're desperate to get back. (You see) other players coming in and doing well, people are doubting you and saying that we should move him on. I've heard it all.

"But if we all get behind Henderson and he finds his top form he can be a very big asset for (Jurgen) Klopp this year.

"I'm hoping he starts the season strong, gets his confidence early and I think he will be a big player for us. I just want everyone to get behind him and give him that chance."
