Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini offered no excuses after their 5-0 home thrashing by Inter Milan.

Inter demolished Genoa 5-0 at Marassi, including a Dejan Stankovic stunner of a volley from the centre-circle.

"I think Dejan Stankovic's goal reflects the entire match, as it was a great moment of inspiration along with a horrible mistake from us," said Gasperini.

Stankovic volleyed in from 54 metres - the centre-circle - after a poor Marco Amelia clearance.

"When you compromise the game the way we did with our first three goals, then it becomes incredibly difficult to get back on track. We had started fairly well and were dangerous in attack, but clearly you cannot make errors like this against Inter. You will lose and, in the worst-case scenario, get hammered the way we were tonight.

"Obviously our confidence evaporated and so we fell apart, favouring Inter even more. We made it far too easy for them."

Stankovic's bizarre strike arrived four minutes into first half stoppages at Marassi, making it 3-0 for Inter.

"Up until the third goal we still had a chance of getting back into it, but scored that way in first half stoppages really took the wind out of our sails. We just didn't believe in it anymore."

Nonetheless, the supporters in the stadium continued to wave their flags and cheer throughout.

"The fans truly were wonderful. We're terribly disappointed and this had never happened in my time here, but they helped us to realise this is a moment and it will pass.

"We must remain concentrated, as in Serie A you cannot afford to give anything away. This is in a way the best situation for a Coach, as it can only get better! Naturally we need to look back over everything that happened and quickly cancel it out."
