Fulham boss Jol insists Stoke fans did not influence Murphy change

Fulham skipper Danny Murphy was barracked throughout by Stoke City fans in their defeat on Saturday.

The former Liverpool midfielder was substituted shortly after being booked, as tempers flared in the second half, but Martin Jol insisted his decision had not been influenced by the terrace taunts.

"I know Danny, and he is a clever player, so I never thought he would get a second booking," said the Fulham manager. "We were saying on the bench that he had to be careful, but he is not stupid.

"He got a knock, and he actually took the decision himself to come off. I don't think he was getting too involved. The crowd were against him, but you have this in England.

"I don't know if he expected the Stoke fans to be on his back, but I thought he handled the pressure. I think there was something in the past, with Wolves and Stoke, where he was probably a bit critical. That is the reason it happened, but that happens in football, and he coped."
