FOXES FOCUS: Can Leicester duo Vardy and Mahrez be stopped?

We all thought it would over by now.

Leicester City have certainly played above themselves in the opening four months of the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League season.

Or have they?

Claudio Ranieri has the Foxes sitting pretty at the top of the table after 16 matches having produced 10 wins and five draws to register a league-high 35 points.

More than Chelsea (not difficult), Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham and more than the bottom three teams combined.

Ever so occasionally we see mid-to-lower-table clubs string together an early-season run before dropping off prior to the business end of proceedings.

Think West Ham United before Christmas last season, West Bromwich Albion in the first half of the 2012/13 campaign, Bolton hanging around the top five until December of 2010, and the likes of Blackpool and Swansea City batting above their averages early in their recent promotion seasons.

But none before them, in recent history, have had such an impact as Leicester have had this term.

Two major reasons for this astonishing ascent is the consistent brilliance of star attackers Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez.

The pair of former lower league labourers have taken England's top flight by storm in 2015.

Vardy - if you hadn't already heard - is a former non-league footballer who has risen through the ranks to sit atop the Premier League's scoring charts, setting a new record along the way by scoring in 11 straight matches.

A remarkable feat considering he was toiling with Fleetwood Town as recently as 2012.

His partner in crime is Algeria international Mahrez who the frugal Foxes forked out just £400,000 for in January 2014 to French Ligue 2 club Le Havre.

It's quite an exceptional circumstance that we see two guys who have worked tirelessly to reach this level and then kick on and dominate one of the most competitive organisations in world football.

The dynamic duo have scored 26 of Leicester's 34 goals to sit 1st and 3rd on the Golden Boot charts respectively, while Mahrez has provided seven assists to further enhance his match-winning credentials.

Only Arsenal's £42million-signing Mesut Ozil (13) has more.

Taking a closer look at Vardy and Mahrez indicates that they are truly in irresistible touch and it is a nightmare trying to separate the pair.

Let's say I was the technical director in charge of transfers at any given club in the league. I need a creative forward. Someone who can score goals when required, someone who can unlock a defence with pinpoint delivery. Someone who can turn a game on its head.

The names J.Vardy and R.Mahrez come across my desk but I can only afford one. (According to Ranieri, no club can afford either!)

Who do I go after?

Here within lies the issue…I can't decide!

According to the EA Sports Player Performance Index(PPI), Mahrez tops the charts on 509 while Vardy is close behind in second with 495. Next best is Everton's Romelu Lukaku on 419…so between the twosome and the rest of the individuals in the Prem, it is basically daylight.

The pair both cover more than 11km per match, meaning they are willing to do the hard work for the rest of the team, and they are both not scared to put in a tackle when needed.

Vardy has won over 70% of the challenges he has made while the further advanced Mahrez has been getting his hands dirty with a solid number of interceptions (14) to add to his creative game.

The pair are also frequently on the ball in the opposition half with both completing more than 70% of their passes in attack (Vardy 81%) while the shots on target category notes that Leicester are getting 3.1 goal-bound efforts from the destructive doublet per game.

Vardy's 27 efforts on goal and Mahrez's 23 are the most by any attacking duo and their percentages of shots on target - 65.70% for Mahrez and 61.40% for Vardy - only rival and then better any striker in the league apart from Tottenham's Harry Kane and Manchester City's Sergio Aguero (both 63%).

The fact that at least one of these players has scored in all 16 of Leicester's matches in 2015/16 is also a noteworthy statistic as is the fact that Mahrez scores in every 101 minutes he is on the pitch, while the prolific Vardy needs just over 88 minutes to ensure he puts the ball in the back of the net.

That is better than a goal a game!

Opposing managers around the country will be doing their homework on how to stop the pair, and although there is likely to be a stage this season where their scoring sonance is muted, it has been a celebration of wealth for the most part at the King Power Stadium and the eight other venues the East Midlanders have visited in the current term.

Neither player can be prised away from each other at this juncture and it is a raffle to see who will end up enjoying the fruits of their labour more so than the other come season's end.

I was unable to make a decision on who I want to sign, my technical director hat is now off, but one thing I do know is that this pair are not done creating havoc among their white-collar counterparts.

I wish good luck to any opponent going up against this formidable force in the coming weeks as the Foxes festivities continue under the direction and control of two unassuming and humble professionals who have seemingly come from nothing to be on the lips of every Premier League follower worldwide.
