England goalkeeper legend Peter Shilton says Ben Foster needs to leave Manchester United on-loan to earn a place in the 2010 South Africa World Cup squad.

He said: "I wouldn't advise Foster to leave United permanently. It's a great club and, if he was playing for them regularly, he would be playing top-class football every week.

"For his long-term future, being United keeper would be great. But from England's point of view, you would want him to try to be playing regular Premier League football, certainly next season leading into a World Cup year. Even if it's on loan.

"It is unusual to be playing reserve football and be in the international team."
