Former Newcastle Jet Kohler turns fortunes around

Former Newcastle Jets midfielder Paul Kohler has turned his fortunes around with North Queensland Fury. The 29-year old struggled for game time with the Jets towards the end of his time there but did not lose hope and was installed as the Fury's captain for their pre-season friendly against Brisbane Roar on the weekend and has impressed coach Ian Ferguson greatly with his pre-season form.

"Paul Kohler's been one of the most consistent players over the pre-season and I felt that he showed some good leadership qualities in the last two or three games," Ferguson said.

"I decided to give (the captaincy) to him at the last moment."

Kohler said it was a great feeling to lead the team after experiencing some tough times recently.

"Just to be given the chance this week to lead out the team in front of the home fans on the first occasion is a pretty special moment for me," Kohler said.

"Twelve months ago, I came off the back of a championship with Newcastle then to going 12 months without a club, it was a bit depressing.

"You've just got to believe in your own ability and it paid off, I got the chance to come up here and captain the team. That's satisfying."
