FOOTIE TWEETS: Sunderland celebrate derby stunner; Rio sticks up for RvP and his missus; Football reacts to Millwall controversy

Brad Davies reviews a massive weekend of football on Twitter - including Sunderland's derby triumph and Millwall's shame.

It was yet another big weekend in the English Premier League with a dash of FA Cup Semi Final action thrown in for good measure.

Congratulations go out to Wigan on a 2-0 defeat of Millwall that sees them into their first ever FA Cup final. Unfortunately their trip to Wembley was somewhat overshadowed by ugly scenes attributed to a small group of Millwall fans, with some of the games biggest personalities expressing their disapproval with the group's actions.

Gary Neville: "This is not great. But before anyone even think of saying it ' It's not a return to the 70's and 80's it's some idiots'"

Stan Collymore: "Disgusting scenes at Wembley. Fighting in the Millwall end, things thrown. A Joke."

Gary Linker: "As for those morons we've just seen scrapping in the stands, no one likes you, we don't care!"

Saturday's EPL matches saw a late-show from Arsenal propel them into 3rd, Everton continue their undefeated hot streak and Liverpool frustrated by a plucky Reading.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain tweeted an action shot of himself with this caption: "What a win for us today! Fans were brilliant, kept us going and this is what it means!!! #initTogether #NeverGiveUp."

Golden Boot leader, Luis Suarez saw his side dominate but ultimately fail to get on the scoreboard: "We did everything to win but the ball didn't want to get in. We have to keep trying til the end! YNWA"

Darron Gibson banged in a long overdue goal to help the Toffees to another win: "About time I scored! Great 3 points! #COYB"

An enormously important Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday saw a huge 3 points gained for SUnderland as they went a game clear of relegation against their northern neighbours at St James' Park.

Craig Gardner was in awe of his team's performance tweeting: "Everyone of the lads take a bow."

He went on to celebrate with the travelling fans: "Still can't believe how good the fans were 2 day having photos with everyone was the least I could do #canweplayyoueveryweek"

Scorer of the spectacular 3rd goal, David Vaughn was inundated with well wishes: "Thanks everyone for the messages!! What win #hawaythelads"

Simon Mignolet: "Very good feeling! Thanks for the support and atmosphere everyone and enjoy!!"

And it's fair to say Carlos Cuellar was more than a little pumped with the win, offering up this: "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!! C'mon what an atmosphere people thanks very much for the support it was an amazing victory"

For Newcastle, Jonas Gutierrez was one of the few to venture online, sending a simple sorry to their fans: "Thanks to all and apologise to the real newcastle fans"

After defeat in the derby last week, Manchester United settled their nerves with a solid 2-0 victory at the Britannia over a Stoke City side in freefall.

Rio Ferdinand was quick to chime in about his side's efforts in overcoming both the Potters and gale force winds: "Great win, support was magnificent too! You gave to grind out results here + we done that well today. The wind today was a wind up I'm sure!"

He also took on messenger duties for Mr and Mrs van Persie: "RVP has asked me to tell you that he + his wife don't have twitter accounts so the fakes stop chatting rubbish!"

Brother, Anton had a big wrap for one of Rio's teammates: "Name a better CDM than carrick this season!!! #icant"

Charlie Adam's return to the side was far from a happy one and he made it clear as to how Stoke's last five games are being treated by the players: "Gutted about today. Thanks for support Nice to be back in team today. 5 cup finals to go."

We finish today on the note of another sport that captured the attention of our football heroes over the last 4 days but was best summed up by the words of a fellow Australian:

Tim Cahill "Congratulations Adam Scott. Such an amazing achievement and special moment that will live on forever. The Aussie Master #pureclass"

Well said, Timmy.
