Flanagan to be rewarded with new Liverpool deal

Jon Flanagan is to be rewarded with a new contract according to Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

The 21-year old, who is being likened to five-time Reds title winner Steve Nicol, has been deputising at left-back recently and doing a spectacular job for the Premier League title chasers.

Despite being a naturally right-sided player, Flanagan has taken to the left defensive role like a duck to water and his performances have prompted Rodgers to suggest he will be tied down for the long-term this summer.

"John will be given a new contract - no question. Come the summer he's got another year so he will definitely be given a new deal," Rodgers said of Flanagan.

"He has been outstanding. He reminded me of Steve Nicol against Manchester United on Sunday - a right-footed player on the left side, steady, aggressive, no fear; he's been a revelation, and particularly in the big games.

"It's great when you see a young player develop like that. You can see the confidence he has now. He has made himself an important member of the squad."
