FIFA launch probe into global match fixing

FIFA president Sepp Blatter will join the head of Interpol at a press conference on Monday to reveal details of a major investigation into illegal betting and match-fixing in football. It comes after the arrest of a Singaporean man accused of match-fixing who operated from a base in London, close to Wembley Stadium.

Wilson Raj Perumal was arrested by the Finnish police on Monday when he was trying to fly out of the country from its international airport in Helsinki.

Afterwards, Zambian striker Christopher Musonda, who represented the African country at under-23 level, was also arrested in Finland, according to media reports in the Scandinavian country.

A number of international matches have come under scrutiny, including last year when a 'fake' Togo team lost 3-0 to Bahrain.

FIFA's head of security Chris Eaton told the Daily Telegraph: "The threat from match-fixing to the integrity of the global game is significant. England is the home of football and London is a global financial centre so it does not surprise me that the financial aspects of this activity lead to London."

Eaton said fixers can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on staging friendly internationals aiming to recoup millions of dollars in return.
