FFA offers condolences to family and friends of Phillip Hughes

Official release from Football Federation Australia

Football Federation Australia (FFA) CEO David Gallop has offered his condolences to the family and friends of Australian cricketer Philip Hughes on behalf of the Australian football community.

Hughes tragically passed away today after he was struck in the head by a ball during a Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday.

"The passing of Philip Hughes is an incredibly sad day for Australian sport and on behalf of everyone in Australian football I would like to pass on our condolences to Philip's family, friends and the cricket community.

"For an athlete to lose his life while playing professional sport as a result of an unfortunate accident is very difficult to comprehend and we are all feeling a little numb today.

"Our thoughts are with Philip's family and everyone affected by this tragic accident."

Additionally: 'The football community will pay its respects to Phillip Hughes with a moment's silence before all Hyundai A-League matches this weekend.

'The death of the Australian cricketer has reverberated around the sporting world and fans, players and officials at all five matches will pause for a moment to reflect on Hughes' life and the positive role sport plays in Australian society.'
