Fenerbahce striker van Persie: I might still be at Man Utd if...

Robin van Persie has stated that he would probably have remained a Manchester United player if Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of the club.

Van Persie managed to earn cult hero status at United after almost single handedly guiding the Red Devils to their 20th league title in his debut season back in 2013 but following the departure of Ferguson as manager, the Dutchman endured a sharp dip in form over the next two years.

Eventually, Louis van Gaal decided to dispense with the services of the former Arsenal captain at the start of last season and ahead of his return to Old Trafford with Fenerbahce in the Champions League on Thursday, the Dutch striker has hinted that he could have remained a Manchester United player if Ferguson was in charge of the club.

Van Persie told the Press Association: "We will never know. I could have been that I could have been a player for Manchester United today.

"When I signed that was the idea, that Sir Alex would stay on for a few more years, but in football things change, you can't plan your own path or your coach's path.

"In this world you have to deal with how it comes."
