The Football Association are hoping to have two teams in action at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil next year.
Great Britain entered both men's and women's teams in the Games for London 2012 which included players from England and Wales while those from Northern Ireland and Scotland stepped aside.
It has now been confirmed that the FA want both a men's and women's team for Rio 2016 and have written to the associations of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales regarding the prospect.
"We have received confirmation from the FA of their intention to enter into the qualification process for Rio 2016 for both men and women's tournaments," a British Olympic Association official said.
