The FA have charged Manchester United legend Paul Scholes with misconduct.

The former Oldham Athletic has been hit with the charges after placing 140 bets during a four-year period, reports the Mirror.

Scholes, 44, was co-owner of Salford City during the time between August 2015 and January 2019 when the bets were placed and FA rules prevent anyone working within the game from gambling on football.

Manchester United legend Scholes has become the latest high profile star to fall foul of FA rules on gambling on football.

It is believed that Scholes' offence is more likely to result in a fine and warning rather than lengthy suspension.

The difference is that while Scholes' bets would potentially break the rules, they are believed to have been placed purely for personal enjoyment and without using insider knowledge.

The FA statement read: “Paul Scholes has been charged with misconduct in relation to the FA's betting rules.

“It is alleged he placed 140 bets on football matches, contrary to FA Rule E8, between 17 August 2015 and 12 January 2019. He has until 26 April 2019 to respond to the charge."
