FA Chairman Greg Clarke has described Everton striker Wayne Rooney as an England legend.
The 31-year-old, who recently announced his retirement from international football, has been in news after getting arrested for drunk driving last week. But Clarke insists that the former Three Lions skipper is an icon of his generation.
He said: "It's with sadness that we see Wayne Rooney call time on his England career.
"He is an icon of his generation and an undoubted legend of the game.
"It goes without saying that Wayne has deservedly earned the right to be forever called a Three Lions great."
