EXCLUSIVE: Bristol City grateful to Chelsea for talented Abraham - Johnson

Tammy Abraham has made an enormous impact in his first two weeks with Bristol City.

The 18-year-old striker joined the Robins on a season-long loan from Chelsea in early August and has already endeared himself to the Ashton Gate faithful with his early performances under Lee Johnson.

Abraham scored an 81st minute equaliser on debut in the season opening come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic before coming up with a first-half winner in the first round of the EFL (League) Cup against Wycombe Wanderers.

The talented teenager then added to his tally by scoring twice in the 2-1 triumph of Burton Albion last week before finally drawing a blank midweek against Norwich City.

Four goals in four appearances is a remarkable way to kickstart your loan career with a Championship club and clearly a risk worth taking for Bristol City boss Lee Johnson who admitted it was hard work securing a temporary deal for the highly-rated Abraham.

"We put an awful lot of work into getting him to the club. We had to be very patient and we risked not signing anybody else, because we believed in the boy," Johnson told Tribalfootball.

"It was not easy to get him, because he was very close to staying (at Chelsea) and he went on their tour to the US. We had to be patient, but we put the work in, so we decided to wait.

"It was touch and go, but I felt he was such a good player, it was worth the risk. We'd had a lot of discussions and it was only ever going to be us or Chelsea, but there was still an element of risk to it."

Johnson admits the deal was somewhat of a slow burn but in the end, all parties involved came to a positive agreement, which was ultimately given the green light by Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.

Johnson added: "It took a long time, because we then had to wait for Antonio Conte to come in and take up his job after the Euros.

"Had Chelsea decided to keep him there, we would not have had long to find another striker. In the end it worked out and we now have four good strikers.

"We're very grateful to Chelsea and to Mr Conte."

Abraham's bright start to the 2016/17 season has helped Bristol to eighth on the Championship table with two wins and a defeat from their opening three league fixtures ahead of this weekend's home clash with Newcastle United.
