Exclusive: Rudi Vata talks Celtic, Postecoglou & those Brighton rumours

Celtic cult hero Rudi Vata is convinced Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou can pull off a surprise in this season's Champions League.

Celtic kicked off their campaign with a courageous defeat at home to Real Madrid last week, as Postecoglou experienced his first taste of European football at that level.

Next up for Celtic is Wednesday night against Shakhtar Donetsk, with a result needed after the Real Madrid defeat.

Vata, who spent three years at Celtic and has son Rocco shining inside the club's academy system, has been impressed by the Aussie's impact since last year's appointment. Indeed, from what he's been told by friends still with the club, Postecoglou has everyone united behind him.

He told Tribalfootball.com: "I think he has done a very good job in his first season at Celtic, based on what he's won.

"He has done a tremendous good job has rebuilt the team.

"They were so strong last season and really deserved to win the league with Ange as the architect of the team. He created a good image for himself.

"Celtic, it's a big club and demands huge responsibility, so Ange is showing he's doing a great job.

"Everybody is happy with him."

Vata's connection with Postecoglou goes beyond Celtic. The Albanian had time in Japan with Yokohama FC - the city rivals of Postecoglou's former J-League club, Yokohama F. Marinos. And he's been impressed with how Postecoglou managed to take his methods and ideas and introduce them so smoothly to the Scottish Premiership.

"It's a different challenge for Ange, because he moved from Asia to Europe, it was his first experience in British Football," reasoned Vata.

"To become the manager of Celtic, it's a big responsibility, it's a job you need to handle with a lot of patience and be very intelligent - and of course Ange had the qualities to get through that transition and to become an important manager in British football."

Indeed, Vata says talk of Postecoglou being on the shortlist at Brighton as they seek to fill their vacant manager's position comes as no surprise. However, he can't see him skipping out on Celtic anytime soon.

He adds, "And why not to gone onto bigger things than Scotland? Though, I think he's enjoying himself (at Celtic)."
