EXCLUSIVE: McDermott says Liverpool's 'fantastic centre-backs' key against Roma tonight

Terry McDermott has warned Liverpool against making any assumptions before tonight's Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma.

The Reds will host Eusebio Di Francesco's side at Anfield after steamrolling past Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

Jurgen Klopp had the luxury of making five changes to his starting line-up for Saturday's draw with West Bromwich Albion. Conversely, Roma have thrown everything into their Serie A campaign, with Inter Milan trailing one point behind them in fifth place.

But McDermott, who won the competition three times as a Liverpool player, believes Roma's domestic form will have no bearing on tonight's fixture.

He told Tribalfootball: "Theres no doubt it'll be difficult, people are saying they're fourth in their league. Well that doesn't mean anything.

"It's who plays well on the day and the way Liverpool have performed, certainly against Manchester City, the football we played was unbelievable."

The most surprising aspect of Liverpool's win over Manchester City wasn't the five they put past Ederson Moreas. The Reds have been dominant going forward all season, with the fierce attacking triumvirate of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firminohaving scored 83 goals across all competitions.

What shocked even Liverpool fans was their once flimsy defence conceded just a single goal over two legs against what could potentially be the highest scoring Premier League team of all time.

And McDermott believes the performance showed that Klopp's side could help their attackers by holding onto a lead.

"The second half [against City] was a different type of game, but we proved we could do defend," McDermott added.

"The two centre-backs were fantastic and the fullbacks have a been a revelation. So there's no reason why they cant beat Roma."
