EXCLUSIVE - Man Utd legend Blackmore: Club right to offer whopping contract to 'great talent' Angel Gomes

Clayton Blackmore believes Manchester United did the right thing by securing Angel Gomes to a long-term deal.

Gomes made his senior debut in the final game of last season at the age of 16. United quickly wrapped Gomes up with his first professional contract as Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona begun to consider making a move to sign him.

Reports in the English press suggested United had to fork out £17,000-a-week for the Englishman.

United once let a prodigious young talent named Paul Pogba leave the club after failing to agree on a contract. And Blackmore says United were right to tie the 17-year-old down as soon as possible.

"The Gomes one will be interesting for the club," Blackmore told Tribalfootball.

"He's a great talent. For me, his got to make it [in the first-team]. I'd be worried about everybody else in football if he didn't. He has got that much ability. I could put him against first-team players right now.

"He's got loads to learn because he's only 17, but he's got a lot of talent. He very rarely gives the ball away, he's a good passer, has good vision and can run with it."
