Exclusive: Hamann claims Werner had no choice but to leave Chelsea for RB Leipzig

Timo Werner made the right decision to leave Chelsea and return to RB Leipzig, according to former Germany international Didi Hamann.

Werner moved to Chelsea from Leipzig in 2020 after the Premier League activated his £47.5m release clause.

The 26-year-old played an important role in Chelsea winning the Champions League title in his first season at the club.

But things went downhill during his second campaign after a fall-out with manager Thomas Tuchel, resulting in his exit from the club with 23 goals in 89 appearances.

And Hamann believes Werner had no choice but to leave Stamford Bridge, due to his relationship with Tuchel and need to ensure his selection for Germany's World Cup squad later this year.

"Well, he was at Chelsea for two years or so and he's had his chances to impress," Hamann told TribalFootball.com, on behalf of FreeSuperTips.

"I think he became disillusioned at Chelsea; he was given more than enough chances to impress but failed to do so ultimately.

"I do think he's a player who needs the support of the manager and backs him up.

"With Thomas Tuchel I don't think it's been the case for Timo Werner, he had a spell where he contributed towards that Champions League win, but other than that we simply haven't seen enough.

"You've got to say that he hasn't been a regular fixture at Chelsea and with the World Cup coming up I think the only move for Werner was back to Leipzig and the Bundesliga.

"He needs the game time because obviously he wants to play for Germany in Qatar, so I'm not surprised that he chose to come back."

Werner has started on fire back in his homeland, scoring four goals in four appearances for Leipzig.

The former Stuttgart man will need to keep firing in the goals to impress Die Mannschaft manager Hansi Flick.
