EXCLUSIVE: Everton legend Reid fears 'drawn out manager search' killing players' confidence

Everton legend Peter Reid believes the club's indecisiveness in hiring a new manager will impact their future.

The Toffees sacked Ronald Koeman last month after they accumulated just eight points from their opening nine games.

The club's U23 boss, David Unsworth, was told by the board that he had four games to prove to them that he was the right man to take the job permanently.

Now at the end of November, those four games are up, but yet, Unsworth remains as the interim manager.

And Reid, who won two league titles with Everton in the 1980's, insists the uncertainty is breeding 'a lack of confidence' at Goodison Park.

"I always like clubs to be decisive and Everton, at this moment in time, haven't been decisive," Reid told Tribalfootball.

"If they think Unsworth is the man for the job, give it to him; if they don't, get a new man in. It's very, very simple and I think all the uncertainty just breeds a lack of confidence and that's where the club is at the moment."

Unsworth made over 300 appearances for Everton across two spells and has been in charge of the U23 squad since 2014.

In that time, he has overseen teenagers Tom Davies and Dominic Calvert-Lewin break into the first-team, as well as having five of his players participate in England's U20 World Cup triumph in Korea this past June.

The Englishman has won just once in his five games in charge, and Reid questions whether he can cut it in the ruthless Premier League.

"He knows the younger players. It's [just] getting the balance, but has he got the experience in the Premiership?

"That's for the board of directors to make that decision, but certainly in terms of knowing the football club, knowing the people, Unsworth ticks all the right boxes.

"On the other side he hasn't had any managerial experience, expect for the game against Watford when Martinez was gone and the recent games now."

Names that have been thrown around to fill the position include Burnley's Sean Dyche and Sam Allardyce, who left Crystal Palace in May, but both have decided against moving to Merseyside.

However, Reid says managers should be chomping at the bit to takeover a club the size of Everton.

"Most managers would fancy the Everton job. [They] have a great tradition and with good owners in Mr. Moshiri and [chairman] Bill Kenwright.

"It's one of those jobs that everybody in football would fancy. I wouldn't go into what you read about in the media as gospel."
