Ex-Villa striker Deehan happy with Lambert appointment

Former Aston Villa striker John Deehan is pleased with the appointment of former Norwich City manager Paul Lambert.

Deehan is confident Lambert can improve the team he has supported all of his life - provided he gets the financial backing of American billionaire owner Randy Lerner.

"I think Paul is a very good manager, and his record proves that," Deehan told the Sunday Mercury. "But as for taking this club forward, a lot will depend on what Mr Lerner decides to do.

"He needs to back him in the transfer market there's no doubt about that because this squad needs improving.

"The club needs to bring in some experienced players, the type that you would class as Premier League standard who can supplement the squad as quickly as possible.

"The supporters were delighted with the signing of Darren Bent and we need to build a team around him now.

"Hopefully Mr Lerner will see the need for improvement and back the new boss."
