Ex-Spurs keeper Walker slams FIFA over Qatar fiasco

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Ian Walker has slammed FIFA over their awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

The decision is fast becoming a farce due to Qatar's climate dangers.

Walker, 41 - now a coach in China with Shanghai Shenhua - reckons moving the tournament to winter would be a travesty for losing bidders Australia and the USA.

He told the Daily Star Sunday: "I don't understand it. It wouldn't be fair on the other nations who got their bids together for the World Cup in 2022 in good faith and saw Qatar get it.

"Qatar got given it and now it looks like they can't stage it and the goalposts have been moved for the others. You have to wonder what went on during the bidding process, how this was overlooked.

"If the tournament is four or five weeks, you would be talking at least a couple of months of top players being away from their clubs.

"For the top clubs you are talking of maybe four, five, or six players ripped out of their team. Do you suspend the league? Do you carry on with those clubs paying players and them not being there and their chances of doing well taking a big hit?

"I just don't see how those clubs can carry on a season for two months with their best international players at the World Cup. It would be mayhem.

"It's a dog's dinner. It should be played in the summer. And if a country can't do that it should go to another bidder. It is as simple as that really."
