Ex-Spain boss defends omitting Chelsea's Costa from Euros

Former Spain head coach Vicente del Bosque insists he does not regret leaving Diego Costa out of his squad for Euro 2016 even though the holders were eliminated in the last 16 and lacked a cutting edge throughout the tournament.

A hamstring injury at the end of last season led to Chelsea striker Costa's exclusion from Spain's squad for the tournament.

"Our function was to choose players, to prepare for games and to compete," he said. "We failed to compete but otherwise we did the things I thought we should do. I tried to fulfil my responsibilities in the best way possible.

"Costa? I have no regrets, and I wouldn't forget him for the future. With his enthusiasm, with his desire, as I say, I wouldn't forget about him for the future."
