Former Gunners defender Steve Morrow, head of scouting for the club's youth set-up, is among a number of internal candidates keen on the role but the club are thought to be looking elsewhere after Jonker left to take charge at Wolfsburg.
Former Rangers manager Mark Warburton has admirers at Arsenal.
But it remains to be seen whether he would be prepared to take a backroom role having spent the last four years as a manager.
