Former PSV GM John de Jong says Manchester United were interested in Cody Gakpo until the final week of the summer market.

Gakpo is again being linked with United for the January market.

De Jong recalled to NOS: "Cody has long been on the transfer list at Manchester United. He had to sit and wait as it seemed to be coming.

"This was canceled a week before the end of the transfer window. After that, he had two more options in the Premier League, but you never know how it falls. He made the choice himself.

"In the end I did sit in the discussion with the Supervisory Board: whether or not to sell. I think it is really better for him that he stayed."
