Ex-Newcastle chairman Shepherd: Dalglish did good business for Liverpool over Carroll deal

Former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd insists Liverpool have done good business over Andy Carroll.

Shepherd scoffs at concerns over Carroll's £35 million price-tag.

"If Carroll had told me he wanted to leave three months after signing a new five-year contract I would have told him to act like a man and to go out on the field and do it for the Toon fans he professed to love," Shepherd said.

"He might have sulked for a week or two but I think when the reality of what this football club and the people of this city represent, his responsibilities might have dawned on him. The fact Newcastle were listening to Liverpool's offers, I think, swayed him.

"But even at £35million Kenny Dalglish has done a good deal for Liverpool persuading England's best centre forward to join him. But as a Geordie and a Newcastle supporter it breaks my heart."
