Ex-Man Utd, Spurs striker Sheringham quits retirement

Former Manchester United and Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham has come out of retirement to sign with Kent League side Beckenham Town in their FA Vase campaign.

The 43-year-old played for Millwall, Spurs and Manchester United and ended his career at Colchester last summer.

He will make his comeback against Combined Counties League side Banstead Athletic on Saturday, 19 September.

The Kent League Premier Division is the ninth tier of English football and the FA Vase is open for teams in tier eight or below.

The final of the FA Vase, won last season by Whitley Bay, is held at Wembley.

Chairman Chris McCarthy - a friend of the former Champions League winner - has said he is delighted with his new signing.

He told the club website: "We were all thrilled on Saturday that Teddy took time out to phone at half-time to see how we where getting on in our Vase tie against Wealden.

"It's a great time for the club and the local football community."
