Former Manchester United goalkeeper coach Tony Coton has hailed the endurance of Edwin van der Sar after his performances for Holland at the Euros.

"Does he look like a goalkeeper who is nearly finished? He certainly doesn't to me," Coton told the Manchester Evening News.

"I think the Premiership title win probably took a few years off him, then the Champions League final took more off and now that performance against Italy will have taken even more years off him!

"He ended the season on an incredible high with United and has taken that into the European Championships. He was terrific against Italy but I didn't expect anything less.

"Edwin is a marvellous professional and looks after himself. There is no reason why he should be considering giving up club football.

"He's had one or too little knocks here and there this season but it is nothing out of the ordinary. It was just a game or two.

"At his age unfortunately I broke my leg, had a blood clot problem and had troubles with my knees but Edwin is in fine fettle."

Van der Sar signed for United for £2m from Fulham in 2005 after spending four seasons at Craven Cottage following previous years at Ajax and Juventus.

"I always thought it was strange that Edwin chose Fulham after leaving Italy. I thought he was bigger than that," added Tony.

"So when we had the chance to get him from them it was a great opportunity. You know exactly what you are getting with him. He has been a very successful signing.

"One of his best qualities is his calming influence. You never see Edwin flap. He never panics his defenders. He's also very talkative on the pitch and gives out good early information to his defence.

"The likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have benefited from that."
