Former Manchester United defender Henning Berg has raised questioned marks against Chris Smalling's game.
Berg claimed that Marseille identified and exploited Smalling's distribution from the back to help blunt United's attacking threat in France.
"Defensively he was solid, no problem," said Berg.
"But offensively you could see he's still inexperienced at this level.
"Marseille were leaving him on the ball and then marking everybody else. United really did struggle with the ball and couldn't find the openings.
"You have to give credit to Marseille for exploiting that and making it difficult for United, and especially Smalling. With Rio Ferdinand in the team, their attacking play would have been very different."
